How to Clean a Toaster Oven (No-Scrub, 20 Minutes)

How to Clean a Toaster Oven (Inside and Out)

A toaster oven is the hardest-working small appliance in most kitchens — and the one with the least room to hide dirt. The cavity is small, the heating elements sit inches from your food, and in any convection or air-fry model a fan pushes grease vapour onto every wall. That’s why the glass goes amber, the drip tray goes black, and eventually the thing smokes every time you preheat it.

The fix doesn’t require a caustic oven cleaner. Wirecutter‘s method is a couple of drops of dish soap in half a cup of warm water, a 40-minute soak, and a non-abrasive sponge — plus a baking soda paste for the spots that have truly baked on Wirecutter. Twenty minutes of actual work.

Quick answer: Unplug and let it cool completely. Pull the crumb tray and empty it, then soak the tray, racks and drip pan in warm dish-soap water for 40 minutes. Wipe the interior walls, floor and door with the same soapy solution, avoiding the heating elements and vents. Use a baking soda paste on baked-on stains, finish the glass with a non-abrasive sponge, and let everything dry fully before plugging it back in.

Why Toaster Ovens Get Grimy So Fast

Three things work against you, and none of them are about how often you cook.

The cavity is tiny, so spatter has nowhere to go. A roast chicken in a full-size oven spreads its fat over a cubic metre. In a toaster oven it’s inches from the walls, the ceiling and the glass. That’s why the door film appears before anything else Serious Eats.

Convection fans redistribute grease. On air-fry and convection models, the fan pushes oil vapour into every corner of the cavity — including places a cloth can’t easily reach Wirecutter.

Crumbs are a fire risk, not just a mess. Accumulated crumbs and burnt-on food in the bottom of the appliance are a genuine fire hazard, which is why Wirecutter says to clean it whenever it starts looking cruddy rather than on a fixed calendar Wirecutter. If your toaster oven smokes, sets off the alarm, or makes your eyes sting, that’s a crumb fire in progress.

What You’ll Need

  • Dish soap — a couple of drops in ½ cup of warm water, in a spray bottle Wirecutter
  • Baking soda — for a paste on baked-on stains
  • A non-abrasive sponge and a soft nylon brush — a brush is essential for the crumb tray’s corners and the door seals Southern Living
  • A damp microfiber cloth, plus a dry towel
  • Paper towels — best for the interior glass
  • A vinegar-based or glass cleaner for the exterior of the door
  • Optional: a melamine cleaning sponge (like a Magic Eraser) for light browning on the glass — Serious Eats calls it a godsend for toaster ovens Serious Eats

What to leave in the cupboard: steel wool, abrasive scouring pads and scouring powders. They permanently scratch metal and glass, and on coloured ovens they take the paint off Wirecutter Serious Eats. Caustic oven cleaner is also a no — it attacks non-stick coatings and heating elements.

Step-by-Step: How to Clean a Toaster Oven

Step 1 — Unplug it and let it cool completely

Do this before anything else, even for the exterior. Water and live electricity don’t mix, and a toaster oven cavity stays hot far longer than the outside suggests Southern Living Serious Eats. If you’ve just cooked, give it 30 minutes minimum.

Step 2 — Empty the crumb tray first

Slide the crumb tray out and tip the loose crumbs into the bin — over the sink or straight into the trash, not across your counter. Give it a wipe with a damp microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge, then set it aside for the soak Wirecutter.

Then hold the whole appliance over the bin and shake, or brush, the loose crumbs out of the cavity and out of the seals around the door — that’s where crumbs collect and smoulder Southern Living. Emptying the crumb tray is the one job worth doing after every few uses, not just on cleaning day.

Step 3 — Pull the racks and pans and soak them 40 minutes

Photo: freeimageslive — the same soapy-soak principle that lifts grease off racks and drip pans.

Remove the wire racks, drip pan, baking tray and any air-fry basket, and put them in the sink with the crumb tray. Spray everything with your dish-soap solution and let it sit for at least 40 minutes — ½ cup of warm water with a couple of drops of dish soap is the mix Wirecutter.

While they soak, deal with the cavity. Once soaked, a soft nylon brush or the scrubby side of a sponge handles most of it. For stubborn grease on a drip tray, sprinkle a little Bar Keepers Friend on, add water, scrub and let it sit before rinsing — Serious Eats uses this on trays that resist everything else Serious Eats.

Dry the racks and pans thoroughly before they go back in, or you’ll get rust at the welds and a burnt-water smell on the next bake.

Step 4 — Wipe down the interior walls, floor and ceiling

Photo: Gear Diary — the exposed cavity: elements up top, rack slots at the sides, crumb tray below.

Spray the soapy solution onto the walls, floor and door and wipe with a damp towel or non-abrasive sponge. Work top-down so loosened grime lands on surfaces you haven’t cleaned yet Wirecutter.

Do not spray the heating elements or the vents. Spray drifts, and cleaner on an element burns on and stinks for weeks. If food is stuck to an element, flick it off gently with a dry brush — nothing wet Southern Living.

Don’t forget the ceiling of the cavity, which catches everything rising off your food, and the door seal, where a brush does what a cloth can’t.

Step 5 — Use baking soda paste on baked-on stains

For anything the soap didn’t touch, mix baking soda with enough water to make a paste, spread it on the stain, and leave it 30 minutes before wiping with a paper towel or microfiber cloth. You’ll see the paste pick up colour as it lifts the stain Serious Eats.

To go harder, add hydrogen peroxide instead of water — it reacts with the soda to foam and gives a mild oxygen bleaching effect that’s ideal on a browned interior Serious Eats.

One caution from the experts: a baking soda slurry can dull or discolour some finishes. Test an inconspicuous patch first if your toaster oven has a coloured or non-stick interior Wirecutter.

Step 6 — Clean the glass door, inside and out

The inner glass is where the amber haze lives, and it’s the reason you can’t tell if your bagel is browning or burning Southern Living.

Spray the glass with the dish-soap solution and scrub with a non-abrasive or melamine sponge. Support the bottom of the door with your other hand while you scrub so you don’t put pressure on the hinges — the single most useful tip in the whole routine Wirecutter. Alternatively, use a baking soda and vinegar slurry with a non-abrasive sponge.

Wipe the residue off with a damp towel, then buff the interior glass with a paper towel to bring the shine back without lint Southern Living. Finish the outside of the door with a vinegar-based or glass cleaner and paper towels.

Step 7 — Leave the heating elements alone

This is counter-intuitive, and it’s genuine manufacturer advice. Breville’s product team recommends not touching the elements at all, because they break very easily if pressure is applied, and drips that fall onto them simply burn off over time — open a window and let it happen Serious Eats. A dry soft brush to knock off loose debris is the absolute limit.

Step 8 — Wipe the exterior and the controls

The outside heats up in use, which turns kitchen dust and airborne oil into a sticky film that ordinary wiping won’t shift Serious Eats. Wipe with a damp soapy cloth, paying attention to the buttons, knobs and handle, then wipe again with clean water to remove soap residue Cosmo Appliances. For genuinely sticky exterior grime, a grease-cutting cleaner like Bar Keepers Friend or Krud Kutter does it in one pass Serious Eats.

Step 9 — Dry fully, reassemble, then test

Let everything air-dry completely with the door open — the appliance must be fully dry before you plug it back in Southern Living. Reassemble the tray, racks and pans, plug it in, and run it empty on a low setting for a few minutes to burn off any residue and confirm everything works Cosmo Appliances. A faint smell on that first run is normal; heavy smoke is not — unplug it and look for paste you missed on an element.

6 Mistakes That Make It Worse

  1. Cleaning it hot. Unplug and cool first, every time. The cavity stays hot much longer than the casing Serious Eats.
  2. Spraying the heating elements. Cleaner bakes onto them and smells for weeks. Dry-brush only Southern Living.
  3. Reaching for steel wool or scouring powder. Permanent scratches on metal and glass Wirecutter.
  4. Skipping the 40-minute soak. Scrub a cold, dry, greasy rack and you’ll be there all evening.
  5. Putting the racks back wet. Rust at the welds, then a smell every time you toast.
  6. Lining the drip pan with foil without checking the manual. It’s a popular shortcut, but several manufacturers advise against it because of the overheating risk Southern Living.

How Often Should You Clean a Toaster Oven?

Weekly if you use it daily — that’s the consensus. A toaster oven in daily use should be cleaned about once a week to stop it smoking up the kitchen; a lightly used one can go monthly Southern Living Serious Eats.

Split it into two rhythms, because the jobs aren’t the same weight:

  • Every few uses: empty and wipe the crumb tray. This is the step that prevents fires.
  • Weekly: full cavity wipe, glass door, exterior.
  • Monthly or quarterly: the baking-soda-paste deep clean, including the racks and drip pan.

And clean immediately — don’t wait for the schedule — if you’ve had a spill or you notice smoking. Crumbs and burnt-on food are a fire hazard, not just an aesthetic problem Wirecutter.

FAQ

Why does my toaster oven smoke when I turn it on? Almost always crumbs and baked-on grease on the floor of the cavity or the elements. Empty the crumb tray, clean the interior, and let drips on the heating elements burn off with a window open Serious Eats.

How do I remove baked-on grease from a toaster oven? Baking soda paste, left 30 minutes, then wiped off — or the same paste made with hydrogen peroxide for a mild bleaching boost on browned interiors. Lightly abrasive melamine sponges also lift stains without scratching Serious Eats.

Can I use vinegar to clean a toaster oven? Yes, but mostly in combination with baking soda. On its own vinegar lacks the abrasive power to shift tough stains; combined with soda it reacts and adds real lifting power. Rinse well afterwards so you don’t transfer flavour to your food Serious Eats.

Can I use regular oven cleaner in a toaster oven? No. Caustic oven cleaners can damage non-stick coatings, painted exteriors and heating elements, and the cavity is too small to rinse properly. Stick to dish soap and baking soda Serious Eats.

How do I clean the glass door without scratching it? Dish-soap solution plus a non-abrasive or melamine sponge, scrubbing while you support the bottom of the door so you don’t stress the hinges. Never use steel wool or scouring powder on glass Wirecutter.

Is it safe to line the drip pan with foil? Check your manual first. It’s a popular shortcut, but several manufacturers advise against foil or reusable liners because they can cause overheating Southern Living.

How long does it take to clean a toaster oven? About 20 minutes of active work plus a 40-minute soak for the racks and trays Wirecutter.

Can I put the racks and crumb tray in the dishwasher? Some are dishwasher-safe and some aren’t — check the manual. Hand-washing in hot soapy water with a nylon brush is always safe, and it avoids the discolouration dishwashers can cause on aluminium trays Cosmo Appliances.
